"The place of life is not the place of history. In one, mystery passes. In the other, reality is corrected." Agustina Bessa Luís

For this exhibition seven contemporary artists were invited to create seven original works of art to evoke seven doctors representative of the "1911 Generation", the generation responsible for the reformation of medical teaching in Lisbon, in the context of Republican revolution. The objectif of the exhibition andaccompanying book is to evoke the life and work of the founders of the Faculty of Medicine, University ofLisbon, through dialogue established by the artists, recreating its foundational poetic under the actual sensibility and thinking. It is to establish a productive dialogue between man and history, and between it and the world through art.

In the first installation, Helena Almeida evokes Celestino da Costa, the youngest of the group and the one that reached great prominence in science, distinguishing himself as the greatest embryologist of the peninsula and with notable work in the area of histophysiology of the endocrine glands. "Dentro de Mim" (“Inside of Myself”), the title of a recent series in which the artist resolved to inscribe this work, reinforces the intimate character of the evocative experience, that Isabel Carlos presents as a "coming and going between putting into view and hiding, that is equally a movement that goes from individual experience to the universal character that all the work of art must pursue."

In the next installation, José Pedro Croft evokes Azevedo Neves, founder of the Clinical Analysis laboratory of Hospitals of Lisbon (laboratório de Análises Clínicas dos Hospitais de Lisboa), who created the First Committee of the Fight against Cancer (Primeira Comissão da Luta Contra o Cancro), ending up a leader in Legal Medicine. João Lobo Antunes, in the text of the presentation of this work, refers to the singularity of the work that the artist created: "[…] so simple in its appearance, constructed with an architectural logic, defining virtual spaces in a scholarly combination of two elements with nothing in common and, in essence, one more example of a singular inorganic hybridization so apparent in other works of his, taking back the tradition of paleolithic painting and Egyptian hieroglyphics, that, as someone said, connected the subject to a myriad of predicates."

Noé Sendas centers his work on Marck Athias, foundership of medical and biological experimental research in Portugal, who, through microscopic observation, developed histology and phisiology. He studied in Paris, worked in Mathias Duval's laboratory, and ended up being one of the founding fathers of the new Portuguese medicine. The evocative video installation is centered precisely on hearing and speaking. Also, in the simulation of a monologue of the artist, by António Cabrita, there is a phrase that clarifies the meaning of this installation: "[…] the specificity of a scientific work is also a dialogue with other specialities and some patience and humility. So it became evident that on many occasions Dr. Athias was 'his mouth and ears'."

Ângela Ferreira works on Anibal Bettencourt, another of the founding fathers of modern Portuguese medicine. He is the oldest of the professors of the basic disciplines and has been around the longest. He directed the Câmara Pestana Institute (Instituto Câmara Pestana), where he developed extraordinary scientific activities in the field of experimental medicine and in bacteriology. He was also dedicated to photography. João Fernandes, in the text of the presentation, underlines the conceptual rigor of the artist’s approach to the scientist's work: "In the project that Ângela Ferreira presents now, starting from the reference of the life and work of the Portuguese doctor Anibal Bettencourt, one of the main pioneers in the research on bilharziosis, […] whose parasites are transmissible through water and clothing, the association between the various semantic planes of conceptualization and perception of the artist's research emerges clearly evident."

Cristina Mateus evokes Sílvio Rebello, founder of the Institute of Pharmacology and General Therapy (Instituto de Farmacologia e Terapêutica Geral). Pioneer, inter nos, of Experimental Pharmacology, however, he never stopped clinical practice. He was also dedicated to poetry. However, it is this last facet that which seduced the artist the most, that, from a poem of the doctor's, constructs "a perceptive environment based on the decontextualization of certain linguistic devices and the consequent implosion of a linear narrative in the visual register. So, that which in the original poem would be framed by a more or less transparent narrative structure, becomes in the actual installation fragmentary and intrinsically abstract", in the words of Miguel Von Hafe Pérez’s presentation.

José Barrías evokes Henrique de Vilhena, distinguished anatomist, who also performed functions of professor of artistic anatomy in the School of Fine Arts (Escola de Belas Artes). He evokes him slackening symbolically the concept of space and of time, as one can read in Mario Bertoni’s text: "It is a journey, therefore, the installation that Barrias proposes, (…) a trajectory not physically possible, but possible with the eyes, a funneled space-time that is trajectory to seeing, […] a narrowing that means to signify how much the potentials, as it advances, concentrate, condense and become thicker and thicker: besides, in physics black holes represent the highest concentration of material and energy. In counterpart, space-time is amplified in the sense of the spectator’s point of observation because, discharging and dissolving itself in life, art augments its potential of ambiguity and significant valencies."

Finally, Miguel Palma evokes Francisco Gentil, a notable surgeon, who distinguished himself in the fight against cancer in Portugal. The art critic Óscar Faria describes and comments on this work of the artist in the following terms: "A telescope is pointing to a lamella of great dimensions, where one can observe something formally similar to a group of stars. The invitation to explore the universe transforms itself into the observation of a cancerous cell. The metaphor is powerful: we do not know the inside of our bodies as well as the most distant galaxies. There is even in this contemplation something painful. And also marvelous."
