A exposição

Looking at the future and to build hope is a plan and an obligation of States and Peoples.

In this sense, the creation of the National Health Service 35 years ago is a decisive step on the way to a more cohesive and caring society. It was a decision for the future and today the National Health Service remains a project with Future.

Health and hope is what we read in the faces that appear on this allusive exposure of the 35th anniversary of the NHS, faces that are also living witnesses of the route that the NHS has done in their lives and the lives of thousands of Portuguese. [...]

To ensure sustainable NHS, where integration, complementarity, excellence, innovation and optimization of resources are permanent guidelines, is our obligation, as citizens and Governors.

The National Health Service is a heritage of all and is a legacy that this generation SNS, looking at the future, want to perpetuate.

So let us to assume, all, the major mission to continue participating in the reform and development of the National Health Service

Paulo Moita de Macedo, Minister of Health, in Exhibition catalogue.

The exhibition Looking at the future is part of the oficial commemorations of 35 th anniversary of the Portuguese NHS - National Health Service, organized by the Ministry of Health in 2014. It shows a set of portraits of young people from a village in the interior of Portugal, Vila Nova de Ceira, by Luisa Ferreira. Every year, summer after summer, Luisa Ferreira was photographing these young people since 1993, in groups and individually, always in the same natural setting, an olive field.

They live mostly in that village, their birthplace, but the way as they live has nothing to do with that of the traditional rural societies. They all are, in one way or another, connected with the rest of the world through reading, networks and other sociability fostered by the technologies of communication.

In each of the portrayed we can see, beyond the natural physiognomic differences, traces of cultural singularity, such as the way they dress themselves and personal objects with which (some) have chosen to be portrayed. Their culture is hybrid: a mix of local and global, rural and urban. They reflect a very powerful sentiment of beauty and serenity, partially because of the relation of empathy that the photographer created with the models. That transmit us a mixing of tranquility and trust. They have in their eyes the horizon of hope. Almost all of them were born after the creation of the NHS - Portuguese National Health Service, 35 years ago. Their living conditions are largely debtor of this great Portuguese collective project, which makes us very proud because it represents a milestone civilization.

The Portuguese NHS is not a right or an inheritance, is a dream that became reality. The dream of making our country healthier, more prosperous. It is the fulfillment of that dream which enables young people here portrayed by the photographer Luisa Ferreira look us well - eye to eye, challenging the future - despite the clouds that have recently have overshadowed our daily lives. And this is because probably they know that at any time, whenever need it, the NHS has its doors open, and will do everything to repair promptly the short circuits of life, often unpredictable.

We must look to the future. The quality, equity and accessibility that the NHS has accustomed us over all these years can only be maintained by ensuring its continuous improvement and sustainability.
