O autor começa por abordar algumas práticas médicas antigas fundadoras do racionalismo médico, presentes em civilizações como a egípcia, chinesa, indiana e grega; atravessa a Idade Média, uma época marcada pela medicina monástica, pela medicina árabe e pelo nascimento das universidades; analisa a época do Renascimento, em que destaca a emergência da moderna medicina científica, a fundação do Hospital de Todos os Santos e a rede das Misericórdias; cruza o século XVII, em que aborda, entre muitos outros aspectos, a medicina no quadro da Revolução Científica e da emergência dos Estados-nação; reflecte sobre o século XVIII, com destaque para a reforma pombalina e os grandes movimentos filosóficos e políticos desse tempo; percorre o século XIX, em que se assiste à progressiva especialização da medicina e a reformas pioneiras no campo da saúde pública em Portugal; e os séculos XX e XXI em que o desenvolvimento tecnocientífico se traduz num progresso sem paralelo da medicina, que Portugal participa activamente, com investigação e iniciativas pioneiras nalgumas áreas. The book History of Medicine in Portugal - Origins, links and contexts by Manuel Valente Alves shows the evolution of Portuguese medicine intertwined with science, visual arts, philosophy, politics and other fields of knowledge. With a great graphical beauty, profusely illustrated with hundreds of carefully selected images, many of them from some of the most important museums, libraries and historical archives in the world, this book, written in simple language and accessible even to non-specialist readers, is an amazing journey through the History of Medicine, from its beginnings to the present day, focusing on the Portuguese reality.

The work consists of more than one hundred small historical narratives, organized chronologically, which are bound together by setting a global history of medicine. The author begins by an approach to some old medical founding practices of medical rationalism, present in civilizations like the Egyptian, Chinese, Indian and Greek; crosses the Middle Ages, a time marked by the monastic medicine, the Arab medicine and the birth of universities; analyzes the Renaissance period, in which highlights the emergence of modern scientific medicine, the foundation of the Hospital of All Saints and the network of Misericordias; crosses the seventeenth century, in which shows, among many other things, the medicine under the Scientific Revolution and the emergence of nation-states; reflects on the eighteenth century, especially the Pombal reform and the great philosophical and political movements of that time; runs through the nineteenth century, in which we witness the progressive specialization of medicine and the pioneering reforms in the field of public health in Portugal; and the XX and XXI centuries in the techno-scientific development is resulting in unparalleled medical progress that Portugal is actively involved with research and pioneering initiatives in some areas.
