"When in 2002 the Portuguese team of the Journal of General Practiceinvited Manuel Valente Alves to restructure the cover of the Journalaccording with the content of files to publish, was far from imaginingwhere would take this initiative. What began as a attempt to give life to a cover uncharacteristic, became the deepening of the project started with the book Medical Images - Fragments of a History, a initiative of crossing knowledge and experiences triggered within the Porto 2001, European Capital of Culture. With over time, the supplement 'Medical Images' has gained its own identity, irreversibly marking the Journal and assuming a clear autonomy, acting as a counterpoint to the technical content of the corresponding file. [...]. [This book] is, so say, the suggestion of possible subsequent global meanings that can be found by analyzing the whole twelve material contained in the supplements. There is an inseparable unity between each text and the images, and the drive remains in this book, despite the graphical reinterpretation that Manuel Valente Alves and Nina Szielasko give to each set. The ordination and organization of their units is not, however, which was followed in the Journal: in the Portuguese Journal of General Practice each supplement obeyed to the contents of the respective file; in this book the supplements are reorganized according to their more introspective and more technical nature."
